NEW YORK — Victoria Aviles, owner of Bridge Cleaners & Tailors and King Garment Care in New York, made 2009’s list of top entrepreneurs in American Drycleaner’s sister publication, Crain’s New York Business.

After suffering a 20% drop in business at her two drycleaning shops, Aviles is adding services ranging from shoe polishing and repair to closet organizing. “I am willing to do anything in the world to keep the business growing,” she says.

Now that the kids are back in school, it’s worth reminding drycleaners that education should never stop. Whether related to the industry or the many other topics relevant to life, imagine how informed you’d be if you learned something new every day.

My latest learning experiences have come from two financial gurus, one of whom tells you how to live well on the money you’ve got, and another who tells people how to live “green” and prosper. I offer them as recommendations for operators who want to keep more of their money.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed suit against chemical manufacturer Anscott Industries, charging a major shareholder and two others in connection with a fraudulent “pump-and-dump” scheme that artificially inflated the company’s stock prices.

EVANSTON, Ill. — Legislation is now being introduced to change the rules by which unions can organize private employers — including those in the commercial laundry and drycleaning industries. The bill was scheduled for a vote on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives at the beginning of the month.
