CHICAGO — Lapels Dry Cleaning and Tide Dry Cleaners franchises expand with new stores

CHICAGO — American Drycleaner has received word of new dry cleaning operations from Lapels Dry Cleaning and Tide Dry Cleaners having opened in the past couple of months.

New Massachusetts locations for franchisor Lapels have opened in Cohasset and Cambridge. The Cohasset store is owned by William Ryan, a former sales and marketing executive.

“I started researching business opportunities about 15 years ago and a lot of thought went into making the decision to buy a Lapels franchise,” said Ryan. “Between Lapels products and service and this location, this was the right decision and well worth the wait.”

The new store is open daily and utilizes an eco-friendly dry cleaning process, he says. It features free home delivery to residents of Cohasset and nearby Scituate.

“There were so many reasons why I chose to purchase a Lapels franchise,” Ryan says. “The environmental piece was certainly up there on our list, but it was an overall commitment to a high-quality customer experience that truly sold me.”

NEW YORK — Sibling rivalries, parent-child conflicts and charges of nepotism by non-family staff can interfere with any family enterprise

NEW YORK — Family businesses enjoy many advantages: a shared joy of success, a common pride in tradition, and a stability and loyalty that’s the envy of their clan-free competitors. Even so, there’s a flip side to the coin. Sibling rivalries, parent-child conflicts and charges of nepotism by a non-family staff can interfere with the smooth running of any family enterprise.

Has your dry cleaning business encountered such issues? Let’s discuss how to solve three of the most common problems.

THE LEADERSHIP BATTLE

The time has come to select a leader from the next generation. Several sons and daughters, now in their 40s, want to take charge. How do you avoid creating hurt feelings among the siblings?

“The transition to a new leader can be extremely difficult in a family business,” says Stacey A. Lundgren, a former family business owner and now a consultant in Howell, Mich. “The decision needs to be made on job performance and on the duties that each sibling has taken on over the years.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Take these steps to become the cleaner of choice for the discriminating customer

SAN FRANCISCO — During visits to couture cleaners in large cities, it is always amazing to see the many garments and other textile items that are shipped from outlying regions for cleaning by these expert cleaners.

These shipments do not always contain haute couture, heirlooms or vintage collections. Often, the contents are simply nice quality and easy to process by any competent cleaner with attention to detail and professional skill.

More often than not, these expensive items are transported at the suggestion of the retail stores that sell them, because many retailers tend to distrust the ability of local cleaners to care for luxury fashions.

Many cleaners do not wish to incur the risk of cleaning pricey specialty garments and $1,500-plus bed linens, but you may wish to retain this work in your own market.

If you do want to target the “special” garments in your area, there are several steps you can take to become the cleaner of choice for the discriminating customer.

DOLTON, Ill. — Recollections of relocating from Chicago to the south suburbs

DOLTON, Ill. — I am now celebrating 50 years working full-time in the dry cleaning business. Just after I graduated from high school in 1962, my dad needed help. I worked a 40-hour week while attending Chicago Teachers College in the business department. After graduating from CTC in 1965 on a trimester plan, I started taking night courses at Roosevelt University; I graduated with a master’s degree in accounting in 1967.

I was married in August 1966, and our daughter was born in October 1967. The family business paid three times that of a first-year high school teacher. I chose the dry cleaning business to support my family. It took several years of taking classes part-time but I completed my doctor of business administration degree in 1984. The basics are the same today but the tools are fantastic.

A plan began to develop to expand our business, but it was impossible to do that at our location in Chicago because we were located in two connected buildings in the middle of a city block. Father, I and a contractor buddy of his found a location just outside of Chicago, in Dolton, Ill.

ATLANTA — Show committee picks Las Vegas-based company from

ATLANTA — The Clean Executive Committee has selected Global Experience Specialists (GES) to serve as the official services contractor for the 2013 Clean Show in New Orleans.

Three companies submitted proposals for the June 2013 show. “GES did our show in New Orleans in 2009 and did a great job,” says John Riddle, president of Riddle & Associates, the Clean Show’s management company. “We look forward to working with them again in 2013.”

Chicago hosted the first Clean Show in 1977. United Exposition Service Co. was the official services contractor for that event and subsequent shows. GES purchased United in 1993, and the Las Vegas-based company has continued its partnership with the Clean Show for many shows since.

GES produces 3,000 exhibitions and events annually.

The Clean Show—officially titled the World Educational Congress for Laundering and Drycleaning—attracts people across all segments of the textile care industry, from single-owner, coin-operated laundry and drycleaning establishments to giant industrial and institutional laundries and textile rental companies.

CHICAGO — It’s important to know the difference between full-service and discount brokers

CHICAGO — If you’re one of the millions of Americans who own stocks and bonds, it’s a good bet that you maintain those investments in a brokerage account. Keeping physical possession of stock or bond certificates in this digital age makes about as much sense as stuffing cash under the mattress.

But opening a brokerage account was only your first decision. These days, you must also decide whether to go with a so-called full-service broker or a discount broker, and it’s important to understand the difference.

Discount brokers such as TD Ameritrade, E*TRADE, Charles Schwab and others typically charge between $2 and $20 for individual online trades; full-service brokers such as Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and others charge as much as 10 to 15 times that much. While competition has caused many full-service brokers to reduce commissions lately, on average, you'll still pay $100-$150 for an average trade done through the typical full-service (translation: full-price) broker. And it doesn’t stop there.

LAS VEGAS — The Clean Executive Committee (CEC) announced sites and dates for the next three Clean Shows during a press conference earlier today. As reported Sunday by American Trade Magazines, New Orleans’ Morial Convention Center will host the event over three days in 2013.

In 2015, the Clean Show returns to Atlanta, which last hosted the exhibition in 1987. Las Vegas has been chosen to host the 2017 event.

Show dates are:

  • 2013 — June 21-23, 2013
  • 2015 — April 17-19, 2015
  • 2017 — June 19-21, 2017

The dates reflect a more concise and efficient three-day format designed to give exhibitors and attendees a better value for their time and money invested in the Clean Show, the CEC says.

If the three-day experiment doesn’t work as well as hoped, the CEC could return to the four-day format, according to David Cotter, CEO of the Textile Care Allied Trades Association and Clean 2011 Chairman.

CHICAGO — I like business. I’ve spent most of my adult life helping grow businesses—first as an advertising executive, where I got to learn about high-end stereo chains, foot-pad manufacturers, hair salons and real estate; then as a personal manager, where I was the ad hoc chief executive officer in charge of developing the careers of actors, writers, directors and comedians.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — It was a hot, humid August in most of the U.S., but everyone at Fabricare 2010 in Long Beach, Calif., seemed cool, calm and collected. Held every two years by the California Cleaners Association (CCA), the show benefited from unusually pleasant weather, even for Southern California.

A former executive of Newport Beach, Calif.-based US Dry Cleaning Corp. told the New Orleans Times-Picayune late last week that the company reimbursed him for a $4,800 contribution to the campaign of U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.).

The alleged reimbursement would represent a violation of federal campaign finance law, and may represent an attempt to skirt campaign-finance limits by "bundling" individual contributions on behalf of a larger concern.

EDGEWATER, N.J. — The CBS reality special I Get That A Lot showcased drycleaning last week, with celebrity chef and talk-show host Rachael Ray working the counter of a small New Jersey plant.

The show puts famous people in everyday jobs, where they are inevitably recognized by patrons. The celebrities attempt to trick customers into believing that they are not famous — often doing a poor job on purpose — until they reveal the truth for the hidden cameras.

Saturated with drycleaners of every shape and size, the Chicago market can be tough for a new operation to crack. Going up against the hundreds of Mom-and-Pop shops, chain stores and couture cleaners can seem like an impossible task.

But with focused market positioning and a strong brand, a new operation can still carve out a niche for itself. Now two years old, DryClean Direct has done just that with a green-hued value proposition that’s designed to appeal to urban consumers.
