LAS VEGAS — The story after Clean ’09 in New Orleans was that while attendance had been down from the previous show, the quality of the attendees had been extremely high. The post-show message two years ago was about quality, not quantity.

The 2011 show in gaming mecca Las Vegas “held” on attendee quality and “raised” on total attendance, presenting exhibitors with a vibrant marketplace that had many of them feeling like they were on a hot streak.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Small Business Jobs Act cleared the U.S. House last Thursday on a 237-187 vote after passing the Senate earlier in the week. President Barack Obama plans to sign the $30 billion package of incentives and tax cuts into law today.

WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve Bank is exploring new ways to boost lending to small businesses and startups, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke told a conference of small-business associations, lenders and regulators this morning.

“Making credit accessible to sound small businesses is crucial to our economic recovery,” Bernanke says. “More must be done.”

CHICAGO — Last month, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke announced that the economy had resumed slow growth, meaning that the recession has come to an end. “Main Street,” however, disagrees: Asked, “Based on your experience, do you believe that the recession has come to an end?” an overwhelming 86.5% of drycleaners answered “No,” according to the most recent Wire survey. Just 7.7% said that the economy is improving, and 5.8% answered “Don’t know.”

NEW ORLEANS — Clean ’09, the premier event for the commercial laundering, drycleaning and textile maintenance and rental industry, opened Thursday morning, just before 10 a.m., featuring a little New Orleans fare — a roving jazz band and Mardi-Gras-costumed character who handed out beads to attendees.

NEW ORLEANS — Knocked out of Clean’s rotation temporarily by Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is set to host the industry’s biggest exhibition for the first time in eight years. And while the recession has everyone in this and every other industry carefully counting their pennies, the outlook is positive for this year’s show.

NEW ORLEANS — I have visited New Orleans on several occasions, but this is the first time that I’ve seen Christmas decorations, or for that matter, Santa Claus marching in a jazz funeral. This is also the first time that I encountered weather here that wasn’t as warm as the Cajun cuisine.

WASHINGTON — Several small-business proposals within a recent economic stimulus package within a bill being discussed in the senate are designed to help alleviate the credit crunch, providing help to entrepreneurs stressed by a worsening economic climate.

Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), a senior member of the Senate Committee on Banking, are urging their Republican colleagues to put politics aside in support of the package.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The boards of directors of the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) and the Uniform & Textile Service Association (UTSA) have voted unanimously to restructure the operations of their associations, which could impact inner workings of the Clean Show.
 
The final decision rests with the UTSA membership, who will be asked to formally approve the UTSA board’s action, and with the TRSA membership, who will be requested to amend TRSA’s articles of incorporation and bylaws to make way for some significant changes.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Census Bureau will send questionnaires to an estimated 42,000 laundry and drycleaning businesses next month, launching its 2007 Economic Census. Businesses receiving forms are required by law to respond by Feb. 12, 2008.

Performed every five years, the census measures industry output in all sectors and geographic areas. The report is a “cornerstone” of U.S. economic statistics and offers source data for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers and other economic indicators.
