CHICAGO — Northeast and Midwest take hardest hits with sales down in both March and first quarter

CHICAGO — March proved to be a challenging month for dry cleaners across the nation, as the West was the only region to post sales gains, up 1.5% compared to March 2012, according to results from the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

Despite this, market conditions in the West remain mixed, according to respondents. One cleaner in the region explained that conditions were “increasing slightly” while admitting that other cleaners haven’t been as fortunate. “[There were] five dry cleaners in town, now I'm the only one.”

Though other cleaners in the region provided similar reports, some are seeing improvement. “It’s [been] getting better for [the] last six weeks,” says one respondent from the West. “I have started using online advertising to add new customers.”

CHICAGO — Unlike last February, no help from weather this year

CHICAGO — Dry cleaning sales were a mixed bag in February, with two regions reporting minimal to modest gains while the other two lamented losses around 6%, according to results of this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

An unseasonably warm, dry winter helped sales rebound in February 2012, but the weather wasn’t quite so favorable this February.

The West had the largest month-to-month sales increase at 3.5%. The South followed with a slight bump of 0.5%. Respondents from the Midwest and the Northeast saw their sales fall into the red—by 5.3% and 6.6%, respectively.

“Volume is down. Nothing else has changed dramatically, but sales have dropped off in first-quarter 2013,” says a cleaner from the Northeast. “We are down almost 5%, and I am trying to figure out why.”

“Conditions are stable but not improving,” says a Midwest respondent. “January sales gains were wiped out by snow days in February.”

CHICAGO — West, South also report higher annual sales in 2012 than prior year

CHICAGO — Three of four regions reported better dry cleaning sales for January, led by the West with its 9.1% sales increase compared to January 2012, according to results of the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

The South saw its month-to-month sales rise 1.4%, followed closely by the Midwest at 0.4%. The Northeast was alone in posting declining sales, down 1.0% for the period.

Annual comparative results were slightly more varied across the country. The West was again the leader, with 2012 annual sales increasing 5.3% from 2011. The South’s 2012 sales were 1.4% higher than the previous year’s. But the Midwest (down 1.5%) and the Northeast (down 0.3%) saw their annual sales slip.

CHICAGO — South only other region to see better sales, a 0.9% fourth-quarter boost

CHICAGO — The West was the only region to register increased dry cleaning sales in both December and the fourth quarter of 2012 when compared to the same periods the previous year, according to the results of this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

Operators in the West saw upswings of 3.6% in December-to-December sales and 4.4% in quarter-to-quarter sales. Several operators said they are seeing signs of growth in their areas, but some expressed caution about consumer uncertainty the “fiscal cliff” warnings has caused.

“Good pickup for the holiday season,” says one. “Slow in comparison to the good ol’ days. Cold weather (is) helping to keep winter wear in use where (it’s) normally not so cold.”

“Some industries are starting to trend up,” adds another. “Home prices and sales are slowly moving up. The dry cleaning and laundry industry are still pretty flat. Pickup and delivery services seem to be gaining where front-door retail is flat.”

CHICAGO — Marketing budgets for year varied, with operators in South boosting spending 2.2% in 2012

CHICAGO — Sales grew in two of four regions of the United States in November, according to this month’s StatShot survey. Dry cleaners in the West reported the biggest surge, with sales up 5.3% from November 2011. Sales in the South were up 2.9%.

“A few years ago, I competed against other dry cleaners,” says an operator from the South. “Now, I compete more with restaurants, movie theaters, gas stations and any other business that is fueled by discretionary spending.”

In the Northeast, sales were virtually flat, with operators there reporting a 0.3% decline. “High-end business is good, if you can handle the risk,” says one operator there.

Midwestern operators saw their November sales fall 1.5% from the previous November. Views of the future in that region appear mixed.

CHICAGO – Dry cleaning sales rose average of 4.6% nationwide in October when compared to October 2011

CHICAGO – October proved to be a good month for dry cleaning sales, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey, with every region reporting a year-to-year increase of at least 1.7%.

When comparing October dry cleaning sales to those tallied in October 2011, the South was the big winner with a 6.5% increase. Sales rose 6.1% in the Northeast, 4.5% in the West, and 1.7% in the Midwest, according to results of the unscientific survey. Nationally, sales rose 4.6% in October from the prior year, on average.

The Northeast’s bottom line benefited from paying lower utility costs in October, down 2.5% on average from October 2011. Utility costs went up in every other region, but by less than 2%. Costs were up 0.4% in the South, 0.7% in the West and 1.7% in the Midwest.

“Our market had one cleaner close in July of this year,” says an operator from the South. “Our (sales) increases reflect that, but also seem to indicate a bit of strengthening.” But another cautions, “Watch out for that cliff,” apparently referring to the so-called “fiscal cliff.”

CHICAGO — The West joins the Northeast in posting third-quarter sales gains

CHICAGO – The Northeast was the lone bright spot for September dry cleaning sales, posting a 1.8% gain compared to sales recorded in September 2011, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

In comparing September 2012 sales to September 2011, the West saw a 0.1% decrease and the South a 3.9% decline. The Midwest was hit the hardest, with sales down 7.0% from a year earlier.

“After 10 months of year-over-year increases, the bottom seemed to fall out starting in July 2012,” reports an operator from Illinois. “August saw a slight increase, then September was way off. Still can’t get any traction or consistency in sales.”

“September was a rough month, with five Saturdays and five Sundays in one month,” says another operator from the Midwest. “We should see the rebound in October.”

The West joined the Northeast in posting better third-quarter sales compared to a year ago. Both regions posted 2.0% increases in the July-September period. Third-quarter sales were down 2.0% in the South and down 2.4% in the Midwest compared to 2011 business.

September 26, 2012

CHICAGO — West only region to report better first-half profits compared to 2011

CHICAGO – The West and Northeast reported increased sales in August from one year ago, while dry cleaners in the Midwest and South saw their collective sales fall just short of August 2011 levels, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

When comparing first-half profits for 2012 to those for 2011, the only region reporting growth was the West, and it was minimal.

In comparing August 2012 sales to August 2011, the West saw a 6.3% increase. Sales in the Northeast rose 2.4%. The South and the Midwest saw their collective sales each drop 0.2% from August 2011.

First-half profits this year in the West topped 2011’s first-half results by 0.5%. The other regions reported declining profits when compared to the previous year’s January through June: Northeast, down 4.0%; South, down 2.1%; Midwest, down 0.3%.

August 29, 2012

CHICAGO — Nationally, costs were up 1.8% on average compared to July 2011

CHICAGO – Only one of the four regions managed sales gains last month compared to the previous July, according to the most recent AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

The West registered the only July-to-July sales boost, and a minimal one at that, of 0.5%. Month-to-month sales fell by 3.9% in the Midwest, 2.1% in the Northeast and 1.7% in the South.

Nationally, July-to-July sales were down 1.8%.

“Very hot weather and severe competition have caused a drop in sales,” opines an operator from the Midwest. Another adds, “Economy still making our business a challenge. Competition continues to erode pricing.”

From the Northeast: “Taxes, real estate taxes and workmans’ comp is killing us!”

“Sales are soft,” says an operator in the West. “We have had positive (year-to-year) and (month-to-month) growth for the past four years, and in May we went a bit negative for the first time. Same for June and July.”

July 25, 2012

CHICAGO — Northeast only bright spot with 0.6% month-to-month gain

CHICAGO – Last year at this time, it was three of four regions reporting June sales increases compared to the prior year. This year, it’s just the opposite, according to the results of this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

The Northeast was the only region to register a June-to-June sales boost, and it was only 0.6%. Sales were down an identical 0.6% in the West, 3.4% in the South and 4.8% in the Midwest.

As for the second quarter, April through June, the numbers improved slightly. The Northeast posted a 1.0% quarter-to-quarter increase compared to 2011, followed closely by the West at 0.9%. Quarterly sales were down 1.6% in the Midwest and 2.7% in the South.

As one might imagine from those figures, comments offered by dry cleaners were somewhat gloomy:

June 27, 2012

CHICAGO — Sales increases attributed in part to higher prices

CHICAGO – Dry cleaning sales for May grew in all four regions, the fourth month there have been across-the-board gains this year, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey. Nationwide, sales increased 3.7%, while all regions also reported upticks in prices from May 2011.

Drycleaners in the West posted 8.3% growth when comparing May 2012 to May 2011. About 81% of respondents there reported a rise in sales, while the remainder saw their sales remain unchanged.

“May last year was very strong for us. Sales have been more consistent than last year. We are still looking at a 5-7% increase for the year,” says an operator from the West. Another reported adding 20% in tuxedo cleaning accounts.

The other regions saw smaller but still significant sales increases in May from one year ago: South, up 3.2%; Midwest, up 2.5%; and Northeast, up 2.1%.

“We’ve had our best five-month start ever,” raves a Midwest drycleaner.

But for every good report, there were as many or more bad.

May 30, 2012

CHICAGO — Dry cleaning sales grew between 2.0% and 2.4% in April

CHICAGO — Dry cleaning sales grew between 2.0% and 2.4% in every region of the United States last month, the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey reports. Meanwhile, all regions report having decreased payrolls since this time last year.

When business results for April were compared to the same month last year, operators in the Northeast collectively posted the biggest gain at 2.4%, followed by the South (2.2%), Midwest (2.1%) and West (2.0%).

“We are seeing much higher sales (up 18% from last year) in our store than other cleaners in our surrounding area (within 10 miles),” says an operator from the West. “It’s probably due to our pricing (we’re discounted dry cleaners with $2.50 base price), along with our smart marketing/ads and improvement in quality of press with new equipment.”

“Steady. The Midwest economy has been steady the past 6-9 months due in part to the ag industry and supporting businesses,” adds a Midwest cleaner.

April 25, 2012

CHICAGO — First-quarter sales up 5% in West

CHICAGO — Drycleaning sales rose 4.4% in the West last month from March 2011 figures and expanded 5% during the first quarter of 2012 when compared to last year, results from the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey show.

“Things are getting better,” says a Western operator. “Average order is up. Adding new customers to the routes is easier.”

“Market conditions are better,” adds a West Hollywood cleaner. “Lot of entertainment work, one industry doing well in recession.”

The South (up 1.3%) and the Midwest (up 1%) posted small gains in March compared to March 2011, but their quarterly numbers rivaled those of the West. First-quarter sales in the Midwest rose 4.3% from 2011; in the South, they were up 3.5%.

Most operators tried to keep the results in perspective.

“While my business has seen a rise of 20% for the first quarter, this was compared to very weak sales in 2011,” says a Midwestern cleaner. “The jump in March was caused by a large restoration project. Otherwise the core business was down 2%.”

March 28, 2012

CHICAGO — The Northeast leads healthy gains across the country in February

CHICAGO — What a difference a year makes.

Heavy winter storms affected every region of the nation in February 2011, plunging dry cleaning sales to bone-chilling depths. But thanks to an unseasonably warm, dry winter in most parts of the country this February, sales rebounded in a big way, according to results of this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

Every region posted healthy gains in February compared to February 2011, with the Northeast’s 8.7% increase leading the way. Next was the Midwest with a 7.8% gain, followed by the South at 6.6% and the West at 4.3%.

Nationally, 76.2% of respondents posted year-to-year sales increases.

“The mild winter produced better-than-expected sales in 2012,” says an operator in the Northeast. “Last winter was so harsh on the East Coast, we lost almost 10 days of work between blizzards and power outages, that this winter season was a breeze. Although there was much less heavy-coat and winter-garment cleaning, we did pick up volume just because we were able to stay open and people were able to get to work.”

February 29, 2012

CHICAGO — The record snowfalls that impacted business in a big way last January were nowhere to be seen this January, as all four regions reported sales increases of at least 4%, according to results of the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

The Northeast benefited most, it seems, with sales there up 7.8% from January 2011. Not far behind was the Midwest, where January sales rose 6.3%. Sales in the South were up 4.9%, followed closely by the West and its 4.1% boost.

Annual comparative results were more varied across the country. The Northeast was again the leader, with 2011 annual sales increasing 7% from 2010. The West’s 2011 sales were 4.5% higher than the previous year’s, and the South garnered 1.4% more in sales last year than in 2010.

The Midwest was the only region to see its annual sales slip, down 0.4% from 2010.

Nationally, cleaners that responded to the unscientific survey averaged a 5.5% sales increase in January compared to January 2011 and a 2.3% sales increase in calendar year 2011 from 2010.

January 25, 2012

CHICAGO — Dry cleaning sales rose in every region in December and the fourth quarter of 2011, according to this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

The West saw the biggest upswings: 6.3% in December (compared to December 2010) and 9.7% for the quarter (compared to fourth-quarter 2010). One operator characterized business as “stable and improving,” while another says his/her yearly sales are up 6% overall.

Sales grew 4.4% among cleaners in the Northeast in December, and 2.1% for the quarter. “We grew 10% organically and added another 10% growth through acquisitions,” says one cleaner.

But reports out of the Northeast aren’t all rosy. “It’s bad,” laments one operator there. “I have been bleeding for three years. Been in business for 55 years. (I) had 18 in help (but am) down to 11.” Others report discounting their services heavily and finding it difficult to obtain new route customers.

December 28, 2011

CHICAGO — Sales grew in three regions of the United States in November 2011, according to this month’s StatShot survey. Dry cleaners in the Northeast reported the biggest surge, with sales up 3.2% from November 2010.

Sales grew at a more modest pace elsewhere, with the South up 1.0% and the West up 0.5%. Midwestern operators saw their November 2011 sales fall 1.1% from the previous November.

“2011 was another challenging year,” says a Midwestern operator. “It can be most clearly defined by the statement that, ‘flat sales are the new up.’ With slight monthly increases year over year, there is a clear expectation that 2012 will be a good year.”

“Struggling, pulling out all the stops,” reports an operator from the South. “Trying everything to generate sales. Just slow to no response.”

“Business is still spotty, but improving,” reports a Western operator. “I feel next year will be much better.”

November 23, 2011

CHICAGO – The Northeast was the lone bright spot for October dry cleaning sales, posting a 2.6% gain compared to sales for October 2010, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

In comparing October 2011 sales to October 2010, the West saw a 0.6% decrease and the Midwest a 1.8% decline. The South was hit the hardest, with sales down 2.6% from a year earlier.

“It’s still scary out there, but we have managed to put together three really good months,” says a Southern operator. Another adds, “Last three weeks have shown a slight but steady increase in laundry and dry cleaning. Household items are about the same.”

“Since our town put in a smoking ban at bars and restaurants, we have been seeing a slowdown in dry cleaning,” reports a Midwestern dry cleaner. But another operator in the region says their sales have been up three months in a row after three years of almost steady decline.

“We used to live on cash flow,” laments an operator from the West. “Now, we are behind.”

October 26, 2011

CHICAGO – The Northeast was the lone bright spot for September dry cleaning sales, posting a 5.7% gain compared to sales for September 2010, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

In comparing September 2011 sales to September 2010, the South saw a 1.2% decrease and the Midwest a 1.4% decline. The West was hit the hardest, with sales down 6.1% from a year earlier.

“Even with aggressive promotions, sales continue to slide in Southern California,” reports a Western operator.

The Northeast was also the only region to post gains in third-quarter sales from a year ago. They were up 2.8%. The other regions reported declining sales when compared to the previous year’s July, August and September: South, down 0.9%; Midwest, down 3.1%; and the West, down 4.8%.

September 28, 2011

CHICAGO – The West and Northeast reported small increases in August sales from one year ago, while operators in the Midwest and South saw their collective sales fail to reach August 2010 levels, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

When comparing first-half profits for 2011 to those for 2010, the only region reporting growth was the West.

In comparing August 2011 sales to August 2010, the West saw a 0.8% increase. Sales in the Northeast rose 0.7%. The South saw its collective sales fall 1.2% from August 2010, while sales in the Midwest dropped 3.2%.

First-half profits this year in the West topped 2010’s first-half results by 1.8%. The other regions reported declining profits when compared to the previous year’s January through June: South, down 3.9%; Northeast, down 5%; and the Midwest, down 6.2%.

“Sales are up but, as you see, profits are not up as much because expenses are also up,” writes an operator from the South.

August 24, 2011

CHICAGO – Only one of the four regions managed sales gains in July compared to the previous year, according to the most recent AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

The West registered the only July-to-July sales boost, and a minimal one at that, of 0.9%. The South saw sales plummet 9.3%, while Midwestern sales fell 4.6%. Sales were nearly flat in the Northeast, which suffered a 0.7% drop.

Some operators, particularly in the Midwest, blamed higher-than-average temperatures for the poor sales month.

“Too hot to do any business! No one is wearing any ‘drycleanable’ clothing in this heat,” wrote one Midwestern operator, while another proclaimed, “One of the hottest Julys in recorded history.”

But there were many more comments about our country’s struggling economy and its impact on small business, particularly in the South.

“Business seems to be declining rapidly,” lamented a Southern operator. “People are trying to save money any way they can and reducing their drycleaning use is one of them.”

July 27, 2011

CHICAGO – While three of the four regions reported June sales increases compared to the prior year, the numbers were relatively flat nationwide, according to this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

The West registered the biggest June-to-June sales boost of 3.0%. The Midwest was up 1.2%, the Northeast 1.1% and the South 0.7%. Nationally, monthly sales increased 1.7% compared to June 2010.

“Business is very good despite summer,” says an operator from the West. “Best summer we have had in six years, but my area has a lot of movie business, so (I) don’t know if it’s typical.”

Another Western operator reported having their best month in 37 months, and July was up 13% at the time they took the survey.

“Piece count is relatively flat; our revenue increase is due entirely to a price increase we enacted in early April,” a Northeastern operator elaborated.

“I suppose 1% up is better than 1% down,” laments an operator from the South. “Still same prices. No changes in three years (and) 15% down from 2008 numbers.”

July 1, 2011

CHICAGO – Sales for May grew in all four regions, the first time there have been across-the-board gains this year, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey. Nationwide, sales increased 3.0%, while all regions also reported upticks in prices from May 2010.

Drycleaners in the Northeast posted tremendous 10.2% growth when comparing May 2011 to May 2010. About 86% of respondents there reported a rise in sales, while equal shares of 7% saw their sales dip or remain unchanged.
