LAUREL, Md. — The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute recently graduated its 353rd Advanced Drycleaning Course class, consisting of eight students.

The course covered advanced aspects of running a dry cleaning business. Students learned the finer points of cleaning, finishing, stain removal, cleaning wedding gowns, and much more.

DLI has been the premier international trade association for garment care professionals since 1883, representing retail dry cleaning and laundry facilities in the United States and around the world. DLI’s School of Drycleaning Technology has offered education on dry cleaning since 1927.

BROCKTON, Mass. — Zoots, Massachusetts’ premier drycleaning company, and Tweeds Dry Cleaning, the No. 1 family-owned operation in New Jersey, announced they have merged. Together, the companies will have sales in excess of $15 million per year, employ 300 workers and serve more than 150,000 customers.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Small-business owners and entrepreneurs finding it difficult to get credit will soon be looking in an unlikely place — Sam’s Club. The sister company to Wal-Mart announced this week that it is testing an online program to make loans of $5,000 to $25,000 to qualifying members.

NEW ORLEANS — Clean ’09, the premier event for the commercial laundering, drycleaning and textile maintenance and rental industry, opened Thursday morning, just before 10 a.m., featuring a little New Orleans fare — a roving jazz band and Mardi-Gras-costumed character who handed out beads to attendees.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — U.S. Dry Cleaning recently took part in Equities Magazine’s Third Annual MarketSite Conference, which was available via webcast from the publication’s website, www.equitiesmagazine.com.

During the webcast, representatives of a diverse range of sectors discussed their companies’ corporate histories, financials, products and properties, and the strategies and partnerships that will be used to achieve growth.

NEW ORLEANS — Exhibit sales open this month for Clean ’09, the textile-care industry’s premier trade show, scheduled for June 18-21, 2009, in New Orleans.

Show managers Riddle & Associates will begin mailing Clean ’09 exhibitor packets to every company that exhibited at Clean ’07 in Las Vegas in early May. Exhibitors at other recent Clean Shows and companies who have expressed interest in exhibiting will receive a prospectus later in the month, the company says.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — U.S. Dry Cleaning Corp. announced last week that it has completed an initial public offering (IPO) of approximately $6 million, which will be earmarked toward its effort to build a national chain.

“We are very excited to complete the first IPO in the drycleaning industry,” says Robert Y. Lee, CEO director and co-founder of the company. “Several outstanding financial companies have supported our vision to become the industry’s first national, premier chain.
