FAIRFIELD, N.J., and LAUREL, Md. — Boards for both have discussed ways that groups can work more closely together for good of industry

FAIRFIELD, N.J., and LAUREL, Md. — The Textile Care Allied Trades Association (TCATA) and the Drycleaning and Laundry Institute (DLI) have recently strengthened cooperation between the two organizations, TCATA reports in its most recent Tidings e-mail newsletter.

The boards of directors for both organizations have discussed ways that the two groups can work more closely together for the good of the industry.

Fred Schwarzmann of A.L. Wilson Chemical Co., a DLI board member, has been appointed official liaison to the TCATA board; Kevin Lawson of Tri-State Equipment has been appointed liaison to the DLI board.

The particulars will evolve over the years, TCATA says, but members of both organizations should expect to begin seeing more information about the other’s major activities.

“Increasing the level of communication and cooperation only makes sense,” says TCATA President Bryant Dunivan, from Energenics Corp. “The two associations have always had common interests, and the challenges that the industry has faced in recent years has only increased the need for and benefit of a closer relationship.”

NEW YORK CITY — Will premiums go down? Will it be easier to shop for insurance? Will available policies offer better coverage?

NEW YORK CITY — It’s the nation’s most comprehensive health insurance reform since Medicare. And it’s been endorsed as constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Now, how will the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) affect your dry cleaning business? Will your premiums go down? Will it be easier to shop for insurance? Will the available policies offer better coverage? And will you be protected from those profit-busting price hikes that so often occur when one employee in a small group gets seriously ill?

We’ll answer your most important questions at the end of this article. Here’s one thing to get out of the way first, though: No employer will be required to provide health insurance. However, some employers, as you will see, will pay penalties if they do not provide insurance and their employees decide to buy insurance from the new statewide insurance pools.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The unique fabricare advantages of GreenEarth’s environmentally safe

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — GreenEarth Cleaning has signed Wotek Corp., Piscataway, N.J., as master licensor of its dry cleaning process for India and the Middle East, GreenEarth reports.

A U.S. engineering company known for exporting and servicing well-known dry cleaning and laundry brands, Wotek will license GreenEarth’s patented process to hotels and progressive drycleaning operators.

The unique fabricare advantages of GreenEarth’s environmentally safe, liquid silicone-based process were a key reason why Wotek sought to partner with GreenEarth.

With the Wotek agreement, GreenEarth is now licensed in 33 countries. It has more than 1,600 affiliate licenses worldwide, approximately half of which are in the United States.

“The level of interest in GreenEarth, both internationally and here in the U.S., continues to grow,” says Tim Maxwell, president of GreenEarth Cleaning. “Our focus remains on quality over quantity; we are very selective about who we partner with to license our patented process and trademarks.”

CHICAGO — When it comes to investing your money, there’s more than enough pessimism to go around, and nowhere is it easier to find than in today’s municipal bond market. Many state and local municipalities are facing the toughest budget problems they have ever seen. California, Illinois and New Jersey are among the states wrestling with money woes. Major cities such as Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Columbus, Ohio, are on a long list of municipalities looking at major tax increases and/or cutting of services and personnel as a last resort for rising above an enveloping debt crisis.

Marilyn Cohen, president and CEO of Envision Capital Management, describes the current bond market as “the biggest slow-motion train wreck I've ever seen.”

FAIRFIELD, N.J. — An outstanding business program, a resort area with much to see and do, and near-perfect weather combined to make the Textile Care Allied Trades Association (TCATA) Annual Conference in Park City, Utah, last month one of the group's best ever, the association says.

Jade West of the National Association of Wholesaler Distributors provided attendees with an overview of federal legislation and regulation having a significant impact on businesses that has passed or may be passed.

Best-selling author Joachim de Posada discussed the “marshmallow principle” of delayed gratification, the subject of a famous 1970s experiment. He explained how businesses might apply the principle to be more successful.

Economist Alan Beaulieu explained to attendees how they could make adjustments in their business planning to prosper in anticipated, predictable economic cycles.

At the closing dinner, several members were recognized for achieving milestone anniversaries. Foster-Stephens of Elk Grove Village, Ill., became only the fifth company to celebrate 75 years of association membership.

LOS ANGELES — There’s a drycleaner in my neighborhood that brags that, “The only greener way to care for your clothes is to use a rock and a stream.”

That drycleaner has no solar panels, uses fluorescent lighting (which remains lit 24 hours a day, though the business is closed for 10 of those hours), has no reusable or even bio-degradable packaging, and is in fact a perc cleaner. Why does the business advertise itself as green? “Because consumers like green.”

And why don’t they don’t incorporate any green initiatives into their operations? “We’ve run our business the same way for 50 years, we see no reason to change.”

What, I asked, would they think if other industries operated that way: no computers, no fax machines, no remote-controlled televisions. “That’s different, that’s innovation. This green technology is only a different way of doing the same thing.”

NEW YORK — The National Cleaners Association (NCA) will host the Texcare 2011 Trade Show Oct. 15-16 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center, Secaucus, N.J. Admission will be free for active drycleaners.

NCA promises “all the latest and greatest new technologies and solvents will be running live and demonstrating for you what they’re capable of.”

Attendees can expect to see the revolutionary advances in drycleaning solvents to ahead-of-the-curve wetcleaning systems and the latest in tensioning equipment, computer software and more, NCA says.

Show manager Ann Hargrove says Texcare educational sessions never conflict with exhibit times. This year’s seminar program has been developed specifically to help drycleaners weather the current economic storms. Presentations will include:

CHICAGO — The year was 1977. I was 20 years old, creating advertising supplements for shopping malls, and I had the opportunity to use a new technology—the Exxon QWIP machine.

I would put a piece of paper into a small mimeograph-like machine and put a phone handset into a cradle; then, I would stand in amazement as the paper spun. Four minutes later, an ad produced in New Jersey was visible in Maryland. Wow—a technology that communicated printed matter through a phone!

TRENTON, N.J. - The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicating $5 million to funding grants for drycleaners who wish to upgrade to new equipment and cut perchloroethylene emissions.

FAIRFIELD, N.J. — The Textile Care Allied Trades Association (TCATA) and the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) are working together to secure changes to the International Code Council’s (ICC) fire code.

While there are two major standards, fire marshals are increasingly citing the ICC fire code rather than that of the National Fire Protection Standard (NFPS), TCATA says.
