CHICAGO – Sales for May grew in all four regions, the first time there have been across-the-board gains this year, according to the latest AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey. Nationwide, sales increased 3.0%, while all regions also reported upticks in prices from May 2010.

Drycleaners in the Northeast posted tremendous 10.2% growth when comparing May 2011 to May 2010. About 86% of respondents there reported a rise in sales, while equal shares of 7% saw their sales dip or remain unchanged.

CHICAGO — Sales grew 3.3% in the South last month from March 2010 figures, this month’s StatShot survey says, and expanded 3.7% during the first quarter of 2011.

“Things seem to be improving,” one Southern operator says. “We are cautiously optimistic. March was a very pleasant surprise.” “The market is going up slowly,” says another. “But up!”

CHICAGO — Sales fell alongside the snow in February, according to this month’s StatShot survey, with heavy winter storms affecting every region in the nation.

“The first two weeks of February were decimated by snowstorms,” says the operator of a large Midwestern chain. “In my 30-plus years in the business, this is probably the worst winter from a weather and sales standpoint.”

Drycleaners in the Northeast and Midwest were hit the hardest by winter weather, with January sales down 3.4% and 3.5%, respectively, from the same month in 2010. In the South and West, sales fell 2.4% in January from the year prior. Nationwide, average sales dropped 2.9%.

CHICAGO — September and third-quarter 2010 sales were down in all regions from the prior year, according to this month’s StatShot Survey. However, the sales declines are no longer the double-digit losses seen early in the “Great Recession.”

Midwestern operators fared the best in September, recording a decrease of 1.9% in sales from the prior year after a slight uptick in August. In the West, sales were down 3.1%, the South lost 3.8%, and the Northeast shed 3.9%. Nationwide, sales were down an average of 2.5%.

CHICAGO — April sales grew in two regions of the U.S. compared to last year, fueling hopes that the worst of the recession may be coming to an end.

While April 2009 was likely one of the worst on record, more drycleaners in the Northeast reported year-to-year growth, bringing the average sales increase for April 2010 to 7.5% from April 2009. Operators in the West saw sales grow an average 2.6%.

CHICAGO — Drycleaners expect to keep equipment and supply costs steady in the upcoming year, according to the StatShot panel, a group of industry operators tapped by AmericanDrycleaner.com to contribute financial information anonymously for use at the site.

Nationwide, operators said they expect their plants’ capital expenditures on equipment and supplies to increase an average of 3.2% — about the same rate as inflation. Half (50%) of respondents will try to keep capital expenditures flat, regardless of any price increases in ongoing expenses.
