NAPERVILLE, Ill. — After hearing evidence for five months and deliberating for weeks, a jury issued a second verdict of no liability in favor of R.R. Street & Co. Inc. yesterday, effectively putting an end to a more than decade-long contamination-cleanup case.

The suit was filed in 1998 by the City of Modesto, Calif., and sought more than $162 million in damages and costs from multiple defendants for the perchloroethylene contamination of city drinking water.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 15, 2007) — Vulcan Materials Co. announced Friday that it has reached a settlement with the City of Modesto, Calif., to resolve all claims of alleged perchloroethylene groundwater contamination.

Vulcan will pay Modesto $20 million to remove itself from a lawsuit filed by the city in 1998 against providers and users of perc. A judge ordered the company to pay $7.25 million in punitive damages for one phase of cleanup in the first part of the trial, decided last year.

MODESTO, Calif. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is suing the former landlords of a Modesto drycleaning operation to recover $9 million in expenses it says was pent cleaning up perchloroethylene contamination in the city’s groundwater, according to a recent story in the Modesto Bee.
