Is Your UST Training Up to Date?

DOLTON, Ill. — State of Illinois notice gives UST facilities three weeks to fulfill training requirements

DOLTON, Ill. — During the second week of July, I received a notice from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) that stated all underground storage tank facilities were required to fulfill training requirements. The news to me was the date by which we were to comply—we had three weeks. I quickly faxed the memo over to the safety and compliance company we retain and asked their representatives to find out where and how we could complete the necessary training course.

We still have underground storage tanks for our solvents. The tanks were installed during our removal of older tanks in a previous cleanup requirement several years ago. Businesses greatly impacted by the new mandate are gasoline stations.

Drycleaners Fish Hundreds of Items from Pockets Monthly, Survey Says

CHICAGO — A survey of British drycleaners recently found that customers left more than 9,000 USB memory sticks in garment pockets in 2008. But many more items get left in customer pockets at drop-off, according to the respondents to this month’s Wire survey — and memory sticks aren’t even close to the top of the list.

House Bill Seeks Bag Tax to Combat Pollution

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) introduced a bill last month that seeks to cut pollution by placing a 5-cent tax on single-use plastic bags from drycleaners, grocery stores and other retailers.

“Our environment is literally choking on plastic bags,” Moran said in a statement, noting that oceans and rivers are clogged with plastic wastes. “Equally disturbing, as these plastics break down, toxic chemicals are being released into the environment.”
