In response to popular demand, the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) has again picked Las Vegas as the host city for its annual Five-Star Management Conference, set for Feb. 23-25 at the Wynn Resort.

The event kicks off with a welcome reception on the evening of Feb. 23. Conference activities begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, with opening remarks from DLI CEO Bill Fisher.

QUESTION 1: After almost two decades of increasingly stringent regulation, operators are slowly letting go of perc. Is there a clear winner in the race for a substitute?

BILL FISHER: There’s no winner. If you strip away the health issues, perc is as close to a perfect solvent as the industry has had.

QUESTION 3: When will the industry be able to bounce back, and how close to “normal” will that recovery be? What will the industry look like when the economy recovers?

DAVID COTTER: I don’t think we’re ever going back to the levels seen in 2006 or 2007. We’re in a “reset” mode—we’re going to downsize.

LAUREL, Md. — The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) announced it will hold this year’s Five-Star Marketing Conference at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas Feb. 18-19, 2010.

“Attendees said they wanted to go to Las Vegas, so we’re going back to Las Vegas,” says Mary Scalco, DLI’s senior vice president. “The Venetian is a great property, and we got an incredible deal on hotel suites. Every room is a suite, and they’re only $179.”

LAUREL, Md. — Bill Fisher, CEO of the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), recently appeared on the Voice of America (VOA), the official radio and television broadcasting service of the federal government, to talk about the economic state of the drycleaning industry.

In an interview with reporter Ye Yuan, Fisher explained that the drycleaning industry hit hard times long before the rest of economy went into recession, and that the decline is now approximately 30% to 40%.

CARPINTERIA, Calif. — Fast-food chain Carl’s Jr. announced yesterday that it has won the endorsement of the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) for its chili-cheese burgers and chili-cheese fries. “Messy and delicious,” the reintroduced menu items are “a ‘win-win’ for chili lovers and drycleaners everywhere,” a promotional campaign says.

TRENTON, N.J. — In an incredible show of solidarity, more than 120 members of the industry convened in New Jersey on Friday to deliver testimony against a proposal from the state's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to ban perchloroethylene use in drycleaning completely by 2021.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Showgirls met with crowds in Las Vegas this morning to mark the opening of Clean '07 — a fitting beginning for what looks to be the highest-stepping Clean Show in years.

The entrance and registration desks teemed with visitors to the 30th anniversary edition of the world's largest textile-care trade show well in advance of its 10:00 a.m. start time. Officials of the show's six sponsor associations joined to cut the ribbon, allowing a flood of visitors to enter.
