Md. Dry Cleaner Gets Suspended Sentence for Illegal Waste Disposal

BALTIMORE — Drums containing dry cleaning solvent waste illegally dumped along roadside

BALTIMORE — Discount Dry Cleaners LLC, Laurel, Md., and its owner, Mehret Sium, 58, have been convicted of improperly disposing of hazardous waste in Maryland’s Anne Arundel County, reports state Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler.

Sium, on behalf of her business, pleaded guilty to illegal disposal of hazardous materials. She personally pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to comply with hazardous waste transportation requirements.

The convictions stem from a March 9 incident when the Maryland Department of the Environment Hazardous Response Team was contacted regarding a suspected hazardous drum dumping on Dicus Mill Road near Millersville.

Investigators from the Attorney General’s Environmental Crimes Unit found 18 drums varying in size from 5 to 35 gallons that contained hazardous waste from dry cleaning solvent. Numerous containers had no lids, and none was properly packaged, labeled or marked pursuant to Department of Transportation regulations. The drums were traced back to Discount Dry Cleaners.

Baltimore to Host International Drycleaners Congress in '12

BALTIMORE — International Drycleaners Congress members will gather here for IDC Convention 2012. The Hyatt Regency at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore will host the four-day event on May 11-14, 2012.

The convention will bring together members from all over the world for networking, international reports and discussions about the future of the textile care industry.

Industry leaders are being invited to speak on a variety of topics, ranging from new technological advances to marketing strategies.

ZIPS Collects Record 5,000 Outfits for The Unemployed

GREENBELT, Md. — ZIPS Dry Cleaners, a 24-store chain based in the Baltimore/Washington area, recently collected a record number of garments to help consumers affected by the economic downturn.

In addition to offering free cleaning to the unemployed before job interviews, the company held its Will2Work Clothing Drive in June, collecting more than 5,000 suits and other garments to provide disadvantaged adults with professional attire to wear on the job or to interviews free of charge.

Organized Cleaning?

EVANSTON, Ill. — Legislation is now being introduced to change the rules by which unions can organize private employers — including those in the commercial laundry and drycleaning industries. The bill was scheduled for a vote on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives at the beginning of the month.
