CHICAGO — Led by widespread decreases in the West, second-quarter sales declined 14.2% nationwide, according to the most recent survey of AmericanDrycleaner.com’s StatShot panel, a group of industry operators who contribute financial information anonymously for use at the site.
Hit hard by the mortgage crisis, operators in the West reported unanimously that sales fell in April, May and June compared to the same three-month period in 2007, averaging a whopping 34.3% drop in receipts. Drycleaners in the Midwest fared somewhat better, reporting mixed results that averaged out to a 6.0% falloff in sales.
In the South, operators were split almost evenly between sales growth and sales declines, averaging only a 1% decrease in sales for the second quarter. Unfortunately, responses from the Northeast region were statistically insignificant.
