Actor Peter O’Toole says he has decided on an epitaph for his tombstone — the text from a “Sorry, but...” tag returned with a garment years ago. The Lawrence of Arabia star, 74, says he once dropped off a worn leather jacket stained with “the usual” — blood, Guinness, Scotch and Corn Flakes — only to have it returned with its stains intact and a tag that read, “It distresses us to return work which is not perfect.”
O’Toole has been nominated for an Academy Award for the eighth time in his career, this time in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of an aging actor romancing a younger woman in Venus. O’Toole has never won the award, but has received an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. The winners will be announced Feb. 25.
